Troy begins by creating a digital outline of the subject using 2D modeling software. He creates multiple layers that will be cut and engraved onto premium Baltic birch panels.
After the outline is complete, he breaks the project into polygons and creates an vector file for use in the laser cutter. He engraves the design onto a 1/4” Baltic birch backing board, ending with his signature in the corner. Using the same file, he adjusts the speed of the laser to cut the same design onto 1/8” birch, creating pieces that are ready for stain.
Troy then selects premium wood stains in natural and vibrant hues to add color to the individual pieces and a clear coat on the backing board, accentuating the natural beauty of the wood. While they dry, he assembles a frame from 3/4” maple and applies summer oak stain.
When they’re dry, he glues the stained pieces onto the backing board, utilizing the engraving to ensure perfect placement. The frame is glued and clamped, a sawtooth hanger is affixed, and the corners are reinforced for lasting durability.
